The economical Scania Super 560 R

Scania Super 560 R

As the industry transitions to alternative fuels, diesel trucks remain essential for commercial transport. Manufacturers are working to minimize their environmental impact while helping transport companies save costs. An example is the Scania Super powertrain, tested by Cargo Magazine. The new generation of Scania diesel engines, introduced in November 2021, includes four performance versions: 420 hp, 460 hp, 500 hp, and the most powerful 560 hp variant. The 560 hp engine rivals the V8 engine with 530 hp and features the same Scania Opticruise G33CM transmission. While the lower-power engines are ideal for regular transport, the 560 hp excels in hilly routes and demanding applications, such as forestry.

Why the Name "Super"?

The "Super" designation refers to the powertrain of this version. Technologically, it includes a new 13-liter engine, transmission, and rear axle R756. Scania promises up to 8% fuel savings compared to the older system, with many customers reporting even higher savings.

On the Road

The Scania Super can run on the 12th direct gear most of the time in long-distance transport, ensuring the lowest fuel consumption due to high efficiency and low friction losses. The tested vehicle was equipped with a CRB compression brake and a Scania 4700D retarder, which performed excellently even under full load (39 tons). The route from Senca through Trnava to Jablonica and back provided mild elevations where these systems proved their effectiveness in the test.

The Super engine features dual camshafts (DOHC), four valves per cylinder, and an SCR system. This setup allows precise valve control and supports the Scania Twin-SCR system, enhancing exhaust gas processing efficiency. The exhaust system is concentrated in one unit, increasing placement flexibility.

Practical Benefits

In practice, the Scania Super 560 R effectively reduces fuel consumption even under demanding conditions. On the test route from Senca through Trnava to Jablonica and back, Cargo Magazine editors compared their driving with a Scania trainer's. The trainer achieved an average consumption of 25.24 l/100 km, while the editorial team recorded 27.66 l/100 km. Results showed that experienced drivers could significantly reduce fuel consumption.

Scania also introduced new fuel tanks with capacities ranging from 165 to 700 liters and a fuel optimization system that ensures better use of fuel without the need for maintaining a reserve. This system contributes to more efficient fuel use and reduces the risk of air intake.

Cabin Comfort

While there haven’t been revolutionary changes to the vehicle’s interior, Scania offers a wide range of equipment options, including ventilated leather seats and high-quality soundproofing. The new digital cockpit, introduced in 2024, will provide further improvements for drivers. The first vehicles with this cockpit are already in Slovakia.

The Scania Super 560 R proves that diesel engines can be exceptionally efficient and economical. Combined with advanced technologies and fuel optimization, it represents an ideal solution for demanding conditions and long distances. Transitioning to eco-friendly and cost-effective vehicles is easier with this model.
